Obsession beats discipline - go all-in on your craft until you either die or get reborn.
Obsession vs Discipline Framework
Two fundamentally different modes of sustained effort - discipline is externally motivated forcing function that depletes willpower, while obsession is internally driven compulsion that generates energy.
Decision Rule
If you need discipline to do something, it is probably not your thing. Keep searching for the activity you have to force yourself to stop. The test: can you NOT do this thing for a week? If abstaining is hard, it might be obsession.
How It Works
Discipline depletes because it requires constant self-override. Obsession generates because it aligns with core identity. Discipline asks 'how do I make myself do this?' Obsession asks 'how do I make myself stop?'
Failure Modes
Forcing discipline on something hoping it becomes obsession
Confusing addiction (escapism) with obsession (creation)
Abandoning obsession because it is not immediately profitable
Example Decision
“Person forces themselves to wake at 5am to write (discipline). Another cannot sleep because they are too excited about what they are writing (obsession). Pursue what creates the second state.”
