Obsession beats discipline - go all-in on your craft until you either die or get reborn.

Back to Beliefs

Obsession is superior to discipline in every measurable way

Evidence

Discipline depletes willpower and requires constant self-override. Obsession generates energy and makes stopping harder than continuing. Every historical great was obsessed, not merely disciplined. The question changes from 'how do I make myself do this?' to 'how do I make myself stop?'

Implication

Stop trying to build discipline around things that do not obsess you. Instead, search for what you are already obsessed with and channel that. If you need discipline to do it, it is probably not your thing.

Counter Belief

Discipline is more reliable because obsession is rare and unpredictable. Most successful people succeeded through consistent discipline, not manic obsession. Obsession can lead to burnout and tunnel vision.

Example Application

Person struggling to maintain writing habit realizes they are disciplining themselves into the wrong medium. They are actually obsessed with video. They switch to daily video creation and productivity explodes without willpower.
