What Success Looks Like

Disagreements focus on methods and outcomes rather than character assassination. Both parties feel understood and respected

Steps to Execute

1

Start difficult conversations by sharing your intention

2

Ask them to share their intention

3

Confirm you both believe the other has positive intent

4

Only then discuss the actions/decisions

5

Return to intentions if the conversation gets heated

Checklist

Have I stated my positive intention clearly?
Have I heard their intention and confirmed it?
Are we both operating from positive intent?
When we disagree, are we disagreeing on methods, not motives?

Inputs Needed

  • Willingness to be vulnerable about motivations
  • Benefit of doubt for the other person
  • Clear communication skills

Outputs

  • Reduced defensiveness
  • Faster problem resolution
  • Stronger relationship trust
  • Focus on solutions not blame

Example

Before discussing a business decision: 'My intention is to make sure we're setting ourselves up for long-term success, even if it's painful short-term. What's your intention here?' Then focus on which approach best serves both intentions
