My First Million
The best business ideas come from noticing what's working and doing it better, faster, or for a different audience.
Reality Distortion Field
A psychological influence technique where a charismatic person convinces others that their initial judgment or story is wrong, making them believe an alternative narrative even when evidence contradicts it.
How It Works
The influencer uses a combination of authority, confidence, selective reframing, and persistent contradiction to make the target doubt their own perceptions and accept the influencer's version of reality.
Components
Establish authority and expertise in the conversation
Confidently contradict the other person's version of events
Provide alternative explanations that sound reasonable
Use selective details to support your narrative
Never admit uncertainty or partial wrongness
Make the other person feel like they misunderstood or misremembered
When to Use
When you need to change someone's mind about a narrative, shift blame, or redirect attention from unfavorable facts. Most effective with people who respect your authority or expertise.
When Not to Use
When dealing with documented facts that can be easily verified, when your credibility is already questioned, or when the stakes are so high that getting caught would be catastrophic.
Anti-Patterns to Avoid
Example
“A CEO is confronted by a journalist about a failed product launch. Instead of acknowledging the failure, the CEO confidently reframes it as a 'strategic experiment' and convinces the journalist that calling it a failure shows they don't understand the company's long-term vision.”
